Willow trees for cricket bats have been growing at Shepherds Flat for over a century. As a tribute to this unique part of Australian history, the Tinetti family have created Cricket Willow for visitors to witness the fascinating process of cricket bat manufacture from bud to bat .
Four time Stawell gift finalist Chris Tuohy stumbled upon Cricket Willow in April 2005 and was blown away by the picturesque oval and impressive facilities. Chris chatted with the Tinetti family about the prospect of staging an athletics meeting at this unique venue. All agreed that it was a fantastic idea and soon got to work to bring it to fruition.
The fourth Run for the Willow carnival will be held at Cricket Willow on the first weekend of January 2009. The carnival will again draw some of Australia s finest athletes for a full card of professional footraces ranging from 70m through to 1600m including the 100m Daylesford Gift.
Other features of the carnival include the 3,200m all-comers cross country, Rotary U/18 100m dash, kids races and amusements, an on-course bookmaker, live music and bud to bat tours.
`A big thanks to Chris Tuohy, the Tinetti family and the VAL for a great weekend. You have to be congratulated for such a huge effort getting this gift off the ground, the work you would have had to do is unbelievable.`
(Nathan Allen, 2007 Stawell Gift Winner)
