Eureka Stockade Centre

The Eureka Centre, at the Eureka Stockade in Ballarat, stands at the site of one of the most significant events in Australia`s history - the Eureka Rebellion.

In December 1854, Ballarat`s diggers took up arms against a corrupt and unjust goldfields administration. After years of oppression, the bloody battle that followed led to the birth of true democracy in Australia.

The Eureka Rebellion was a revolution; it was a struggle for a principle, a stand against injustice and oppression. - The birthplace of Australian democracy!

In France it was the storming of the Bastille, in America it was the Boston Tea Party, Lexington and Concord and in Australia - the Battle of the Eureka Stockade. Each represented a step in the march to liberty and democratic freedoms. Mark Twain wrote that Eureka was `a victory won by a battle lost`.
