Breakfast with the Platypus is an early morning downhill bike ride to the nearby river, a stop at a favourite platypus hole to see if the family are awake and then a short cycle to a dam wall where the guide cooks breakfast in the bush overlooking the water. Just enough exercise to justify the outdoor breakfast and the rest of the day on the golf course or in the hot tub. The return journey is assisted by a lift up the hill in our 4x4 enabled adventure tour bus. Previous guests have included children and those who have not experienced the joys of a bicycle saddle for over sixty years.
The Moonlight Monsters Adventure is a nightly spotlighting tour around the Estate highlighting the range of native animals from wallabies to quoll, possums, devils and wombats. A guide will show you the homes of the various locals, including wombats and possums, and talk you through their habits and habitats. Help spot creatures large and small as well as getting an understanding of all those strange calls and noises in the night. Clear skies and some of the purest air in the world means that looking up is often rewarded by a dazzling array of stars.

Guides provide refreshments and gourmet picnics as well as ensuring there is always a back up vehicle if the appeal of hot tub grows too strong.

There is a picture above the Highlander Arms bar of a twenty-pound brown trout liberated earlier this year from waters you can see from the Estate. Tasmania has some of the world`s best wild fighting brown trout in the world and our mission is to connect you with fish you will never forget. This is wilderness fishing at its finest with the prospect of sighting monsters gliding through the purest of water in pristine lakes and rivers. We have some of the best and most experienced fishing guides in Tasmania while the Estate plays host to the only ‘Loomis Endorsed’ fishing lodge in Australia. There are superb waters within a short hike or, at the other extreme, we can arrange at additional cost, heli-fishing in places others have seldom seen, never mind cast a line. We will take you to specific waters, assist with highly knowledgeable entomology and fly patterns, even spot fish for you – all you have to do is tempt, strike and play. If screaming reels are your thing, we will back you to the backing and even help with taxidermy. Tight lines…and book early.
The stuff of dreams: brown, beautiful and beguiling... fly-fishing for wild trout in Tasmania is an experience for both the beginner and the international veteran who has fished the world over. In 1864 the first brown trout were released in Tasmania and these wild fish have bred ever since. Arguably the purest stock in the world, Tasmania’s isolation and abundance of perfect conditions make fishing here a dream location. Tarraleah Estate boasts the only Loomis endorsed fishing Lodge in Australia - and is ranked as “One of the Top Twenty Most Luxurious Fishing Lodges in the World”. All this plus a Loomis Pro-Tackle fishing store; the only fishing tackle shop in the Highlands. Learn the art and craft of fly fishing with some of Australia’s best guides, create your own fly and then bring home the wildest brown trout nature can find - up to 20 pounds earlier this year from water you can just see from the Lodge. We have over thirty lakes and more than six streams within a thirty minute radius. Local lakes have rainbow trout and Atlantic salmon as well as trophy size brown trout. Fishing in Tasmania is often ‘sight fishing’ where you spot and then stalk a specific fish; tremendously exciting. Sometimes a perfect cast required, others you can almost touch. Be guided by our in house guides with all equipment available, trips can be for one day or a month or anything in between. Try out some extraordinary Loomis rods with our compliments. See the difference a $1000 rod can make to your ability to cast with effective length and deadly accuracy. With access to some of the best guides in Australia, we have fishing to suit all levels of experience: individual anglers, couples, mates, fathers and daughters, mothers and sons... Fishing on streams, lakes, rivers and dams are all with in reach; wade, walk, be taken by boat, or try kayak fishing in one of our ‘fish yaks’ for fishing with a difference. Our Loomis Pro-tackle Store at `Adventure Tarraleah` has everything you will need and is the place for the coolest and most deadly fishing gear in Tasmania. We stock clothing, boots and a full range of rods, reels, flies and lines; waders, provisions, books and lessons. We also run fly-tying sessions and casting schools. “Fear no fish” is the Loomis logo - and not for nothing. Local trout even refer to our store as ‘the heart of darkness’ - so tackle up for an unfair advantage as well as looking the part. Talk to one of our guides about the various fishing options and the best waters in the region. Even if you choose to fish alone, never feel under whelmed in front of your quarry - we can provide expert advice, guidance and even a little (actually, very little) sympathy when your adversary gets the better of you..
