Guurrbi Tours

These magical, award-winning tours with Aboriginal Elder Wilfred (Willie) Gordon, are now listed as one of Australia`s Ultimate Must-Do Experiences. Willie is the appointed story-keeper of the Nugal-warra people, and he takes guests to his ancestral rock art sites, set in stunning countryside high in the hills outside Cooktown. Here he shares the stories behind the art, explaining how the paintings speak of the essence of life and the lores of his people. With his great smile and infectious laugh, Willie gives you an amazing insight into Aboriginal society and will have you thinking about your own relationship with the land and how the lores of his people can apply to us all.

`No experience anywhere can hold a light to this,` Maire Thompson, Rotorua, New Zealand.

`An experience I will never forget in my lifetime,` Richie Davis, New South Wales.

Guurrbi Tours Services

Great Emu Tour (ex-Cooktown)

Your tour begins from your Cooktown accommodation, where Nugal-warra Elder and story-keeper, Willie Gordon, meets you for your air-conditioned drive to the rock art sites - a journey of about 40 minutes. On the way you will learn some of the Aboriginal history and stories about the landscape you are passing through.

Once at the entrance of the sites you continue with Willie on foot to visit three rock art sites, including the Rainbow Serpent and Great Emu Caves. At each site Willie explains the significance of the paintings and the stories behind the art, giving guests a unique insight into Aboriginal society and spirituality.

The tour is suitable for most ages: there is a short climb to one of the sites, but overall very little walking is involved. Water is provided.
