On the 17 August 1943 a Catalina flying boat took off from Bowen on an air to sea gunnery training exercise flight. After completing the firing practice, the aircraft was making a run across the wave tops over a choppy sea and it is assumed that the port wing hit the water and the aircraft crashed into the sea. The crash took 14 lives that day. This year Bowen will host a memorial on the 17th August that will mark the 70th year since the crashing of the Catalina off the shores of Bowen.Causeway Lake Markets
