Parliament House is located in State Square at the end of Mitchell Street, adjacent to the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory and Government House. It stands on one of the nationís most significant historic sites. Overlooking the striking Darwin Harbour, the building rests on the site of the Post Office and Telegraph Station which were bombed during the first bombing raid on the Top End on 19 February 1942.

Parliament House in Darwin opened in 1994 and is a magnificent example of contemporary tropical architecture and you may choose to join a free guided tour or enjoy a leisurely self-guided tour.

Parliament House Guided Tour

Free guided tours depart from the foyer of Parliament House at 9am and 11am every Saturday excluding the months of December and January, with an additional tour from May to September at 10.30am on Wednesday.

You will visit all public areas and hear about the history of the site, the building, and the role of Parliament. One highlight of your tour is a visit to the Parliamentary Chamber which reflects the Westminster history and tradition, on which Australia`s parliament is structured.

You will also see an original wall from the Post Office, which has been incorporated in the Historic Lobby and makes an impressive entry point to the Northern Territory Library. Other things to see include Sturt`s Desert Rose Mosaic, the Main Hall, Aboriginal Art Exhibition, the Portrait Gallery of former Chief Ministers and Speakers of the Northern Territory and a Time Capsule due to be opened in 2048.

Self Guided Tour

Available from the Reception within the foyer of Parliament House, you may collect an informative self-guided tour brochure and wander this historic building at your leisure.

The tour identifies seven public areas of Parliament House and includes highlights such as the Northern Territory Flag, the majestic Main Hall, the Bombing of Darwin plaque, the Post Office wall, the Northern Territory Library, Speakers Green and the Portrait Gallery.
