Mungindi Music Festival

In 2005 after three years of drought, the tiny town of Mungindi on the New South Wales/Queensland border gave up waiting for rain. Instead, a local trio of amateur clarinet players came up with a new way to save the town. With some help from the Outreach program at the Sydney Conservatorium, the group put on the first Mungindi Music Festival, bringing hundreds of visitors and top-class musicians into the town, and giving the locals something big to look forward to.

With concerts staged in local wheat paddocks and magnificent timber shearing sheds, the group created one of the Australia’s most unique music festivals that brings world-class musicians to the bush. With a strong emphasis on participation, the festival offers a number of workshops that see children and adult musicians from the region learn from some of Australia’s best.

Held every two years over the October long weekend, the music festival has grown into a nationally recognised and important regional event, hosting acts such as legendary musician Don Burrows, who has been at the forefront of the jazz world for most of his 56 years in the business, the Sydney Youth Orchestra Philharmonic and world-renowned clarinet player Mark Walton.

Everyone is welcome; there is a wide variety of accommodation on offer within our community and in the surrounding areas.
