The Heart of NSW offers a paradise for campers and fisherman, with unspoiled inland lakes, bird sanctuaries and the poetic inspiration of the Lachlan River. Water and nature enthusiasts enjoy skiing, sailing, fishing, bird watching, photography, or just plain relaxing by the lakes or on the riverbank. Fishing and camping maps are available from Lake Cargelligo, Condobolin and tourist centres.
The area also provided some of the most demanding country for 4-wheel drivers and motor cyclists in the International Octagon Safari.
Farming is the main stay of the region especially wheat sheep and cattle along with some of the more exotic industries like native fish, jojoba, lavender, charcoal, broom bush and now an Aboriginal made wine.
There is much Aboriginal culture in the region, including the grave of a very important chief by the name of King. It is marked by replicas of the burial poles originally placed there. Manna Mountain near Burcher shows a long history of aboriginal visitation and there are burial grounds near Condobolin.
Keep an eye out along the river bank for scarred and carved trees or look for ancient axes or middens on the lake shores.
There are many excellent local artists who sell paintings, boomerangs, didgeridoos and carved emu eggs. The Murrin Bridge women also make bags, tea towels and tablecloths.
