In May 1943, the American merchant ship 'Cities Services Boston' sank off Bass Point and although no sailors' lives were lost, 4 Australian soldiers who went to their aid were drowned. When it was built to supply water to the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area, Burrinjuck Dam was ranked as one of the world’s greatest. Building commenced in 1906, the first water was used in 1912 and the original dam was completed in 1927.
