This area takes its name from the great Australian explorer - George Bass. In May 1943, the American merchant ship 'Cities Services Boston' sank off Bass Point and although no sailors' lives were lost, 4 Australian soldiers who went to their aid were drowned. An annual service remembers there bravery and a memorial has been erected on site.

Exploration of the Burragorang Valley commenced in 1802 and the first bridle track followed to explorers' trail. A zig zag road up the mountain started as a track for horses and bullocks but later made a wagon road although it was very steep. Located only a few kilometres from Thredbo, Dead Horse Gap crosses the Great Dividing Range at 1580m and the watershed between the Thredbo Snowy System and the Murray River. Euroka Picnic Area is popular spot for day use and overnight camping area (permits required). The park is situated in the eastern part of Blue Mountains National Park.
