Bridges are not just functional, they can also be scenic and engineering attractions. Spare a few minutes to admire Dunmore Bridge over the Paterson River.
Gan Gan Hill is Port Stephens' highest and most accessible lookout. From a height of 160 metres one can see commanding views of the whole of Port Stephens, right through to Newcastle in the south and the Myall Lakes to the north.
At the right time of year (Spring) the spectacular Gymea lilies - native flowers - are also to be seen.
The Monarch Historical Museum presents history interpreted through displays of artefacts including ancient armour, military uniforms, lady's memorabilia, photographs, toys, early Australian cartoons and much more.
This scenic walk highlights 40 historical sites between Dutchman's Bay and Little Beach, including part of the original gravel road from Newcastle and the towns first cemetery with Chinese fisherman's graves.
The walk ends at the inner lighthouse at Nelson Head, Little Beach where you can explore the lighthouse building. The heritage walk takes about three hours to complete at a leisurely pace.

The Reserve: Nelson Head Lighthouse Cottage and Rescue Station Reserve, nestling within its white picket fence, is situated on a lawned headland that rises some 53 metres (175 feet) just inside the entrance to Port Stephens. In 1875, the headland was chosen as the lighthouse site because it provided the best views of the extensive waters of the Port - and still does!
The Point Stephens Lighthouse is hard to get to by land, but a rewarding experience none the less. While there are no tours, access is not restricted, so feel free to enjoy the wild beauty of nature and the lighthouse, standing strong against it. The lighthouse keepers cottage was burnt out by vandals and adds an eerie touch to this seemingly remote corner of the world.
Built in 1831 by Lt. Caswell using convict labour, Tanilba House is one of the oldest historical homes in Australia.
If you visit in winter you can sit around a cosy open fireplace, there is even a friendly ghost in residence. Furnished in period style and with a fascinating past, the guided tour provides an insight into the history of this grand old house.
