Grafton - Designed by architect H. A. Wilshire and constructed in 1839 as a result of a competition organised by the NSW Government Architect. The dominant feature externally is the circular heads over openings, the most significant being the horseshoe shaped entrance which draws attention to the heavily moulded timber gates. The original Governor`s residence is at the right of the gates and is largely obscured by a large tree, but the gaol itself is easily visible to the public.
Grafton - Grafton is a beautiful city of tree-lined streets, graceful buildings with their Victorian and Edwardian architecture on the banks of the mighty Clarence River.
Historically, Grafton was the early centre of development in the Clarence Valley being gazetted as a municipality in 1859 and then was declared a city in 1885.
Many of Grafton`s buildings are classified by the National Trust including the notorious Grafton Gaol and the Gothic styled Christ Church Cathedral.
