Adelaide Gaol Historic Site And Museum, South Australia

Take a walk around the Adelaide Gaol and unlock a piece of South Australia`s history. On a guided or self-guided tour you will see aspects of prison life as was in South Australia over a period of 147 years - between 1841 and 1988.

Several sections of the original cellblocks are still standing for you to explore, as well as many later additions including the `New Building` - built in 1879! A tour takes you through the cellblocks, exercise yards, the hanging tower and graves area. Between 1840 and 1964 one woman and 44 men were hanged at Adelaide Gaol. Portable gallows were used for 20 of these people; a further 21 were hanged in the New Building and four in the hanging tower. All of these people are buried at the Gaol.

Explore the museum displays including the story of Elizabeth Woolcock - the only woman to be executed in South Australia - and Sister Mary MacKillop who was a regular visitor to both male and female inmates. There`s also a gift shop with souvenirs. Barbecue and refreshments facilities are available by prior arrangement for groups. Guided tours last for one-and-a-half to two hours and can be arranged for groups, or you can join one of the regular Sunday tours at 11am, 12pm and 1pm. Those wishing to undertake a self-guided tour are provided with a map of the Gaol and access to audio recordings throughout the tour. Allow yourself at least one hour.
Night tours by torchlight can be arranged for groups of 15 or more - or you can participate in a `public tour` of up to 25 people - held on the third Thursday of every month. Be among those who have seen and heard strange things in the Gaol and see if you can help us solve some of the mysteries! Night tours are not suitable for those under 15 years of age. Bookings essential.
