The original St Matthews Church was constructed in 1836 of mudbrick. It was built on land donated by Governor Stirling at the eastern edge of Guildford, near the current location of the Guildford Grammar School Chapel. This building was replaced by a second Church built in the centre of Stirling Square which was demolished only 12 years later in a hurricane.
The existing St Matthews was constructed in 1873 from local clay bricks in a style called Flemish bond - the bricks are laid alternately lengthwise and pointing inwards.
